Hoxton Penthouse
Extension and creation of a flexible spare bedroom
Status: Completed 2013
Location: Hoxton Square
Category: Rooftop
Kirkwood McCarthy were asked to look at extending this unique shaped penthouse in Hoxton Square to create further living space and reconfigure the internal layout to include a second bedroom. The original building, designed by E.W.Pugin, is Grade II listed and was converted in 2001 by Buschow Henley Architects to include offices, a restaurant and two apartments.
By retaining the line of the existing façade geometry the original design intent and roof line as seen from Hoxton Square. was preserved. A mechanism of pivot and slide doors allows the new bedroom to be adapted to create a semiprivate study space or an open addition to the main living room. With a rooflight being the only source of natural daylight a framed translucent screen provides both privacy and a diffused light from the stairwell. A cranked rooflight to the East of the living space has been introduced to allow evening sun to permeate this new living space.
DETAILING FOR DAYLIGHT
A new rooflight over the extended living area is angled towards the western sun, drawing long shafts of afternoon light into the living area. A slot recessed strip light illuminates the rooflight by night.
